Anecdotally there seems to be a trend at corporate level of increased private security. Brought on by the recession where a lot of managing directors and CEOs have to engage in hiring private security firms in order to protect themselves and sometimes their staff. As there are a growing number of customers that have lost so much so quickly some of who are resorting to violence in order to express their anger. It goes without saying that this behaviour cannot be condoned; however it Can be understood in the present circumstances. Just think that you had spent 40 years saving your lump sum and within the space a year that lump sum (if it was put into a high-risk fund) could have been almost wiped out. Large companies whether they be banking, equity or construction related would have hundreds and thousands of customers and all you need is a tiny percentage of these customers to resort to violence which would make the need to hire private security in order to protect oneself.

What is involved in hiring private security where would you start, who would you contact and what are the questions that you would need to ask before you make the decision of what company to hire. If you are the CEO of a large company you will have the resources to investigate and the contacts to ask in order to find out which is the right company for you. However the rest of the population would have to make that decision on a lower budget. The professionalism of private security firms can often be called into question. After 9/11 it became common knowledge that the standard of security in airports was in adequate to protect the public. The comparisons that were made were that an employee at McDonald’s is getting paid more than those security personnel in an airport. With all due respect to the employees of McDonald’s but security at an airport should be held with the higher prestige.

Before signing with a security company, you need to decide what level of security you need and how often you need it? What are the services you require. I have made a list of the following questions that you should ask yourself before you make any decision. Apart from hiring a security firm you must go through your home or business to make sure that the basics are covered. A good security for would give you free consultation as a result of a successful tender and tell you what you should do in order to make your house or business secure.

As with any investigation once you start asking some questions they will need onto others start with the topics below and hopefully it will lead to decent research before you make your decision.

1. What is the list of clients that the company already has and can you get testimonials from any of the clients. If you can get names and numbers and make the call yourself this is much better than relying on second-hand information.
2.Does a company have the required license to trade? This is something that should have been submitted to you during the tendering process if not I would get suspicious. Ring your local government office or counsel to find out what are the required licenses to have in order to trade as a private security firm.

3. How long have they been in business? The question that you’re really asking is not how many years experience do they have, but rather years in business as a going concern. They are two fundamentally different questions. The longer they have been in business for greater the chance they will be around in five years time.

4. Do they perform background checks on their employees? This is an important question in any business but hugely important in the private security industry. Think about what you are asking these people to do, you need to trust them implicitly. I would not like anyone with a criminal record protecting my premises.

5. What is their level of expertise? What training do they have? Is all staff trained up to the same standard? Is the person handling your account trained to your satisfaction?

6. Are there any hidden costs with regards to the contract?

As you can see there is a lot to consider, this is by no means a comprehensive list of questions that you need answered however it is a really good starting point and should get you on your way. Another question that you should ask yourself is how long will it needs the service for? Private security is one of these services that the longer you have it the less likely you will do without it. You should have a review period every three years, this will help you to ask those type of questions.

Handling The Manipulative, Backstabbing Office Psychopath

We all have them. Those annoying, manipulative backstabbing colleagues. We normally label them as the ‘office psychopath’. Male, female, it doesn’t matter. In fact, Dr John Clarke, a lecturer at the Continuing Education Center at the University of Sydney and the author of two books on psychopaths says that 1-3 per cent of adult males are psychopaths, but less than 1 per cent of women - meaning perhaps 100,000 are working in a city like Melbourne. That’s a hell of a lot of annoying people, male or female so chances are you have or have had or will have one of them where you work.

It’s important to know the difference between a person that’s termed as an office psychopath and and a person that is just manipulative and outright annoying. According to Dr. John Clarke, an office psychopath is a person who has a  superficial charm and excessive sense of self-worth, can control themselves but just don’t bother to do so, have a glib outlook, generally have short term relationships, a parasitic lifestyle, don’t accept any responsibility for their actions, are impulsive, don’t have any long term goals. They’re also the types who would rather steal a Rolex than save up for one. It’s bad enough working with one of these types but imagine working for one? Dr. John spoke of a man like this. This man was earning over $500,000 a year running a call center so he was in a position of quite some power. He only hired 3 types of women: 1. women who would do anything to get to the top, 2. women with poor body image he could manipulate through sex and 3. older women he could dominate. This man had sex with 17 of the women working at the center and he was working on the rest. Granted, not all office psychopaths are that extreme but you get the picture. Most people we label as an office psychopath are just generally annoying.

You as a manager will, have or are facing some people such as these. What is the best way to handle such people? According to Dr. John, “a management plan for psychopaths is to reinforce their good skills and punish the bad ones. But the best plan is to educate employees about how they operate, and engage them in team building and life coaching to add to their esteem.” To do that, there are some easy methods you can try next time this type of person surfaces in your work place.

1. Back stabbing types love to put others down while elevating themselves. The best way to counter this is to build up your allies in the office, put a stop to any rumours started by these people and hold them accountable. Ask them some very direct questions such as “where did you hear that from, I need names.”

2. Bullies are always fed on fear. Once they have a person in their sights and they sense intimidation, they strike. The best deflection is humor. Put it back on them and turn the joke on them. Walking away is often the best one  and say something like, “I’ll talk with you once you show a bit more respect”.

3. For the constant whingers and whiners in your office: don’t give them the attention they are looking for when they do that. By listening to their negativity and letting them go on and on, you are making it worse. Instead, try asking some very direct questions after you have heard their complaint. Maybe something like, ” I don’t understand but tell me more so that I can understand”, or “what do you suggest we can do about that” or even, “if we do X Y or Z, would that help”? Listen to their complaint by all means but take control of the conversation once you know what the issues are and suggest a solution straight away. By doing this to people that love to whinge and whine, they will eventually get the message that you don’t want to focus on the problem but rather the solution.

4. Control freaks feel that there is only one way to do things and that’s theirs. All other ways are wrong. When they start telling you this then respond with a simple phrase like, “I want you to….” Give them a direction. There’s nothing wrong with listening to someones point of view on another way of doing something but people like this wont listen so don’t even engage them in a conversation about it.

5. And lastly for all those lazy and avoiding type members of your staff. These people generally need very active management from you. When engaging them in a project or task, tell them exactly what you need them to do and how long they have to complete it. You might even need to send them reminders through emails, text messages from time to time to keep them on track. However, don’t mother them as this will make them even more lazy and not take any responsibility for themselves as they know someone else will.

If you are ever faced with these types of people and believe me, if you haven’t already, you inevitably will, try out those simple methods in dealing with them. I have tried them all in places I have worked at as well as in other day to day situations where I  have had to deal with other people. Handling the office psychopath is a challenge, but with the right tools at your disposal, you can stop them from making your life as a manager a total misery.

No more New Pastries

Our bakery had a policy of introducing one new type of pastry each month.  Everyone loved the idea and we would see a large number of people each time the new pastry was introduced.  Unfortunately, our pastry chef did not have any idea what do introduce and often people would hate the new pastry.

The idea of a new pastry was a sound one as it generated a great deal of publicity for us but more often than not, it was a poor choice.  A business management consultant I knew offered me some advice on new product development.  He explained that you had to do some research to find out what your customers liked or thought they wanted.  He offered to do a survey of our customers for a month to see what he could find out.

I looked online and found a free business plan that I could use and I began to study up on everything to do with product development including marketing and promotions.  After the survey was completed, to our surprise, most of our customers weren’t looking for exotic pastries, but just wanted more flavors of many of the products we already carried.

The next month, we introduced a new and improved éclair and offered six new fillings.  We couldn’t keep the éclairs on the shelves to save our lives.  Business was up by almost ten percent in the first two weeks of offering more flavors.  The following week, I invited the local paper to be present when we unveiled our newest pastry.  This time we had a new version of a old favorite except that it had a spicy coffee flavoring.

Research had shown that most of the customers loved coffee flavors and this time was no exception.  We got a lot of free media coverage and today we are doing almost 30% more business consulting firm than we were at this time last year.

Cyber Bullying And Workplace Harassment, Are You Guilty Of It?

I read a very disturbing article in the Herald Sun newspaper yesterday. It had to do with a salesman who claims to have been a victim of cyber bullying. Harassment in the workplace can take many forms but this case is interesting because it was carried out by his boss via email. It is all too easy to fall into that trap as managers. We might be doing it even without realizing it but it’s important to think twice before sending any emails of a disciplinary nature to your staff.

When I read this I was actually quite horrified as this sort of thing has huge implications in Australian Workplace laws and I’m sure it has the same implications in a lot of other countries laws now as well.

Just to give you an idea of some of the emails this worker was sent by his boss: “Now that things are not going your way…..I can offer these words-harden the f**k up. Don’t cry at everything that does not go your way” Another one, “I did not care that you did not take lunch break? As Gordon Gecko said “lunch is for wimps”. I take them but I am still working at 9.39 pm…constantly”. And perhaps the worst one: “You keep forgetting that the money *** forks out for your salary comes from me-not some pensioner shareholder in Idaho. Given that, I demand you get results not f**king excuses. It is not personal it is just business”.

Honestly, this boss is the wimp not the worker he was abusing here. Given the workplace relations laws, wouldn’t you have half the brain to realize that this is nothing more than workplace discrimination? The statistics on workplace bullying by bosses is quite staggering. To quote the Australian Human Rights Commission, “In fact, in 2005 WorkCover (ACT) estimated the dollar ‘cost’ of workplace bullying saying, “The financial cost of workplace bullying to business in Australia is estimated to be between $6 billion and $13 billion a year.” This includes indirect costs, such as absenteeism, labor turnover, loss of productivity and legal costs”.  It also found that  the ’stereotype’ of the ‘bully boss’ was very real, with 72% of bullies being bosses, and 55% of those bullied being rank-and-file workers; and that with regard to turnover “40% of bullied workers voluntarily leave”. What a sad state of affairs! Are you one of those pathetic 72% of bosses? If you are it might be time to stop and think and perhaps even grow up!

I have seen cases like this over and over again in my years in management and believe me, the legitimate ones that make it to court, NEVER go well for bullying bosses. You could end up costing your company thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars in compensation and loosing your job to boot. Is it worth it for you or your company to behave like the boss mentioned at the beginning of this article? That case is obviously going to go to court and as the workers lawyer said in the paper, “It doesn’t matter if you are a janitor or a CEO of a big four bank, there’s a difference between swearing and abusing someone”. It doesn’t matter how bad you think some of your staff are, there are better ways to deal with issues than with threatening emails and the like.

Basically the bottom line is this. If you as a manager think that one or more of your staff members are not performing well, not getting results or are full of excuses, then do something constructive about it. Don’t be like that idiot boss we mentioned earlier. That is no way for a boss to behave or deal with his staff. In fact, for his stupidity and lack of thought, the worker he abused is probably going to cost him a lot more money and it will hurt more because, as he said, “your salary comes from me-not some pensioner shareholder in Idaho”.
